Focuses on the changing organization and operation of American business in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Examines the changing values, activities, functions, and recruitment of businessmen during the evolution of American enterprise. Analysis is organized along three major stages of enterprise: business as personal enterprise dominated by merchants; the rise of large-scale entrepreneurial enterprise in the late nineteenth century; and the development of modern-day, professionally managed business organizations.
